Massive landslide blocks Naches River, Washington, causing residents to evacuate.

A massive landslide about 10 miles west of Naches has closed Highway 410, destroyed a home and diverted the Naches River. Fear of flooding from the river has prompted authorities to begin evacuating residents. Several other homes have been damaged as water from the Naches River found its way around the blockage through private property and back into the river channel, said Robert Cunningham, a Bureau of Reclamation foreman who surveyed the area late this morning.

An aerial view shows a landslide blocking State Route 410, Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009, west of Naches, Wash. The landslide diverted the Naches River and damaged one home.
The slide has destroyed a section of Highway 410, shoving about a quarter of a mile of pavement on Highway 410 into the Naches River. And the hillside still hasn't settled down. "It could be several more days until our crews can go back in there and address the damage to the road, which is severe," said Meagan McFadden, DOT spokeswoman.
